With our last snow day hopefully behind us and warmer weather within reach, it is the perfect time to start making your spring cleaning list. Spring cleaning and decluttering is not only great for your home, but can give you a clean slate before you journey into the new year. Keep reading to learn more about the CMG Group’s tips on decluttering and refreshing your home.

  1. Make A List

You may be looking at your home after months of being trapped indoors and wondering “Where do I begin?”. One of the easiest ways to get started is to devise a plan. Start writing down everything you want to accomplish and categorize it by the type of work. Once you have your list, break it into a weekend schedule. Group a few small and large tasks together each weekend to allow yourself to accomplish the hard and easy tasks each weekend, and then decide who will help with what. For example, if you know that the toy closet is overflowing with new gifts from Christmas and toys from years past, allow your kids to help decide what stays and what will be donated. Depending on their age, you can even teach them how to spread mulch, clean baseboards or organize the garage. As you chop away at your list each weekend, add more to keep the productivity up so that when the weather starts to really warm up, you can spend more time outside enjoying the rays and less time cleaning.

  1. Declutter Effectively

Decluttering can be one of the toughest and most rewarding home tasks. It can be difficult to part with that sweater that you always like when it’s on the hanger, but that you can never seem to find something to pair with it. Instead of putting it away in your cold weather clothes storage, try the Marie Kondo method and ask yourself, does this item truly bring me joy, or does it stress me out? Trust us, once you put it in a bag to donate, you will feel a sense of relief knowing that your closet is just a little less cluttered. The same method can be used for the items in your garage. Ask yourself, does my child need 2 tricycles, or is there one that they favor more. If so, talk with your child about what it means to donate and let them help with delivering their less used tricycle to your local donation store.

  1. Incorporate Cleaning Into Your Everyday Routine

People who seem to always have clean homes are really good at one thing - they clean every day. We aren’t saying you should do a full deep clean on your home every day, that would be exhausting. Instead, try doing little things like making cleaning clutter off countertops before cooking dinner and then wiping down counters after meals a priority. Another example is to keep a squeegee and sponge in your shower. While your showering, do a quick wipe down inside of the shower, and then after you shut off the water, squeegee inside of the doors to keep them streak free and shining. Weaving necessary cleaning into your daily routines will make weekends more enjoyable when you don’t have to spend Saturday doing the mundane cleaning tasks. Once you start, you will build healthy habits and find ways to make cleaning more efficient.
