Our Huntsville area is growing rapidly which means that moving is happening all around us, every single day. Did you know that according to The Huntsville Chamber of Commerce, that Huntsville’s population has grown an amazing 53% since 2000? They also recorded over 19,000 new housing starts in just the past 5 years alone! With all of the growth comes constant moves.

Have you experienced moving into a new home or apartment? If so, you know that it takes coordination with movers, trucks, packing, and cleaning out. It can be overwhelming and costly, however it can also be a great time to sift through years of collected personal belongings and a fun experience considering you can start with a blank slate in your new space! Keep reading to see our CMG Team’s 5 tips for saving money while moving!

  1. Moving During The Week

This one may come as no surprise, but if you choose to go with a local moving company, pricing can fluctuate based on days of the week. Friday - Sunday are some of the most desired days to move, however if you can move during the weekdays we highly recommend it. Another perk of moving during the week is that if you have little ones, they will most likely be in school or daycare which gives you more flexibility to get more done. Lastly, you may find your new neighborhood or apartment less busy during the school and work days which makes it a lot easier to get movers in and out!

  1. Compare Moving Companies

When choosing a moving company, we recommend shopping around to find not only the best reviewed online, but also the best priced. Most moving companies offer the same operations such as packing and unpacking the truck (some will even pack items into boxes like clothes and dishes) and moving heavier items like appliances and safes, but we also suggest looking into companies that will properly wrap and pad furniture so your items don’t end up damaged or broken. There are plenty of local companies in Huntsville to assist with your move and our CMG Team works frequently with movers and recommend our favorites to you.

  1. Book Your Own Truck and/or Move Everything Yourself

Our first two tips are geared towards professional moving services but one of the best ways to save is to DIY your move! U-Haul and Home Depot are a few places that offer competitive daily and hourly rates and with places like Uhaul, you even have an option to book your own truck and hire third-party movers though the app if you want to have help with the heavy lifting. If you choose to move everything without professional help, we definatly recommend researching tips on lifting and packaging to keep your move safe and efficient.

  1. Delcutter

One money-saving tactic to save while moving is to declutter. Moving is a great excuse to purge your closets and drawers of items and form piles for things to keep, things to donate and things to dispose of. Less clutter equals less items to move which can save on truck costs and time spent on packing and unpacking your truck!

  1. Keep Your Receipts

Receipts can stack up when moving. There’s multiple costs to consider based on how you choose to move, but just a few examples are boxes, tape, bubble wrap, furniture wrap, mover tips, truck costs, gas if you choose to rent your own truck, and many more that you may not think of until it’s time to move. If you keep your receipts, you can claim moving expenses on your taxes!
